Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a lightweight carbon fiber having a high strength and modulus of elasticity, by carbonizing a flameproofed fiber having a high fiber density of a specific value or above in an inert atmosphere under specific conditions while stretching the fiber, and completing the carbonization with increasing temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A copolymer containing acrylonitrile and small amounts of methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid is wet spun into an acrylonitrile synthetic fiber, which is then flameproofed in a furnace having a temperature gradient of 230W 290°C. The resultant flameproofed fiber having a fiber density >1.42g/cm3 is carbonized in a temperature range of 300W800°C in an inert atmosphere while being stretched to an extent of 25%, and then the carbonization is completed at a temperature of 800°C or above to give the aimed carbon fiber.
