Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the oxidation of a heating metal of a high melting point in a metal vapor discharge lamp and equalize the heating-resistance characteristics of the heating metal, by coating the heating metal with a heat resistant insulator to make a resistance heating element. CONSTITUTION:A metal vapor discharge lamp houses in its outer tube an emission tube, as well as a starting auxiliary circuit which is equipped with a resistance heating element 18. The resistance heating element 18 is constituted of a heating metal 20 of a high melting point, and a heat resistant insulator 21 which covers the heating metal 20. The heating metal 20, which is formed into a meandering foil, is interposed between a base 21a and a cover 21b that are made of ceramics, these three being connected. Through the means mentioned above, the oxidation of the heating metal 20 is prevented, and the resistance heating characteristics of the heating metal 20 is kept constant.
