Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled agent for water-surface application, having excellent effect to rice blast fungi, low toxicity, and no phytotoxicity to the rice plant, by using o-methylhippuric acid which is a metabolic product in urine or its ester as an effective component.
CONSTITUTION: An agent for controlling rice blast and suitable for water-surface application, is prepared by using o-methylhippuric aicd or its ester of formula II (R is H, 1W5C alkyl, 1W3C cyanoalkyl, or trichloroethyl) as an effective component. The compound of formula II can be prepared by reacting the compound of formula III with glycine to obtain o-methylhippuric acid of formula I (a compound of formula II wherein R is H), which is converted to an ester either by reacting with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst or, if the esterification is difficult, reacting with a chloride in the presence of triethylamine.
