Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of a hardware required for diagnosis of an ECC circuit and then eliminate the external production of a correcting code, by securing an independent control for the take-in action of both a data register and a correcting code register each. CONSTITUTION:The registers 13 and 15 are connected directly to the memory unit 11 with no invention of a sector or the like, and then take in the reading data 5 and the correcting code 4 from the MD and MH parts only in case the signals 20 and 21 controlled separately are set. For diagnosis of an ECC circuit, the diagnosis data are written successively into the addresses at the MD part of the unit 11 through the input data line 1. At the same time, the Hamming bit is also written into the MH part. Then the error data corresponding to the case an error occurs is supplied to the address FF. The error data is held in the register 13 by the control signal 20, and the addresses OO-FF are read successively. Then the Hamming bits are set successiely to the register 15 to be compared with the register 13. Thus a diagnosis is given to the ECC circuit.
