Abstract

PURPOSE: An adhesive which is harmless to health, gives a strong bond within a short time and is useful in the production of laminates for flexible wrapping materials for retort use, prepared by adding an Al compound to a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing a polyolefin with an unsaturated carboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: (1) 100pts.wt. of a polyolefin such as PE or PP and (2) 0.1W 20pts.wt. of a polymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid such as maleic anhydride are molten and mixed together between heated rolls or the like at a temperature higher than the softening point of the component (1) by 10W100°C. Then, the molten mixture is washed with an organic solvent such as acetone to remove completely an unreacted portion of the component (2), thereby to produce a copolymer. To the copolymer is added 0.1W10pts.wt. of (3) an Al compound such as Al (OH)3 at a temperature higher than the m.p. of the copolymer to produce an adhesive.
USE: An adhesive for the preparation of wrapping laminates such as Al/adhesive/PP or Al/adhesive/PE.
