Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high collection efficiency by charging grains by stable corona discharge by detecting a corona discharging current for charging the fine grains contained in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, and controlling an applied voltage so that the detected discharging current is within desired range on any condition.
CONSTITUTION: The exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine 1 is introduced into a charger 2, and a high voltage is applied from a high-voltage power source 3 to the charger 2 through a high-tension cord 3a to charge fine grains in the exhaust gas by corona discharge. At this time, a corona discharging current is detected by a detecting means and feedback control is exercised by the detection signal so that the corona current has a constant value. For example, when the temperature of the exhaust gas is low, the applied voltage is raised to prevent a decrease in corona current, and when high, the applied voltage is lowered to prevent an overcurrent from flowing. The charged fine grains are introduced into a dust collecting container 5 and collected by a metallic mesh filtering material 5a.
