Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent invironmental pollution in a port by a method wherein a sump for sewage is provided at the bottom of a ship's hold, a sewage tank for temporality storing the sewage collected at the sump is connected with the sump through a pump and a pipe, and the sewage being produced by the washing of the interior of the hold by introducing ballast water is temporalily stored in the sewage tank.
CONSTITUTION: The sump 5 for sewage is provided at a part of a double tank 3 at the bottom of the ship's hold, and the sewage pump 8 is connected to the sump 5 through an ejector 15 working as a pump and the pipe 9. When the ballast water is poured into the hold after unloading the bulk cargo from the hold, sewage is formed due to the presence of fine powders of coal, ores or the like remaining in the hold. The sewage is transferred into the sewage tank 8 through the sump 5, leaving only clear ballast water in the hold. The sewage in the tank 8 is thereafter treated in sewage treatment facilities or it is discharged through an outboard valve 12 after the ship clears the port.
