Abstract
PURPOSE: A phenol resin having a moderate gel time and a high fixed carbon con- tent and being useful as a refractory binder, prepared by introducing phosphorus- containing bonds into the molecular structure of a phenol resin.
CONSTITUTION: Phosphorus-containing bonds are introduced into the molecular structure of a phenol resin. As the phenols which can be used, there can be mentioned phenol, cresol, xylenol and bisphenol. As the aldehydes which can be used, there can be mentioned formalaehyde, paraformaldehyde and furfural. In order to introduce phosphorus-containing bonds into the molecule, a catalyst such as phosphoric acid or a polyphosphate ester is used. In the phosphorus-containing bond- bearing phenol resin, when its MW is the same as that of a conventional novolak resin, it is possible to heighten the MW because of its low gel time, and even at the same MW, it is possible to increase further its fixed carbon content by increasing the MW, because of its high fixed carbon content.
