Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a solid urea resin having a sufficient ability as a plasticizer in high yields, by reacting urea with formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst while controlling the water content of the reaction system at a specified level, and removing the water by vacuum.
CONSTITUTION: Urea is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst while the water content of the reaction system is controlled at 13W25wt% with respect to the reaction charge. Then, the reaction mixture is cooled, solidified and dried under vacuum, preferably, until the water content reaches 3wt% or below. When the water content of the reaction system is below 13wt%, the system can not be maintained in the liquid state, and the uniform reaction is not possible, and when the water content exceeds 25wt%, the system after completion of the reaction, when cooled, is separated into two phases, i.e., supernatent layer and precipitates. Accordingly, dewatering by a centrifuge or a filter press becomes necessary and the yield is also decreased.
