Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise the adhesion of rubber to carbon fibers by a treating method in which carbon fibers are treated with the first treating liquid containing specific proportions of a polyepoxy compound, a blocked polyisocyanate compound, and a rubber latex and then with the second treating liquid containing a compound to the separately described formula.
CONSTITUTION: The first treating bath is prepared by a method in which a polyepoxy compound (A) (e.g., sorbitol polyglycidyl ether compound) is uniformly dispersed in water with a surfactant, the solution is mixed with a blocked polyisocyanate compound (B) (e.g., 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate-phenol block compound), and the mixture is further mixed with a rubber latex (e.g., vinylpyridine- styrene-butadiene polymer). In this case, the weight ratios of these components A, B, and C are A/A+B=0.05W0.9 and C/A+B=0.5W15. And, carbon fibers treated with the first treating bath are then treated with the second treating liquid containing a resorcin-formalin-rubber latex with a compound of the formula (where R is an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocabon residual group and n is 0, 1, or 2).
