Abstract
PURPOSE:To form a composite carbide layer with excellent anti-wear property on the surface of a material to be treated by a method wherein elements of the Group IVa and the Group Va of the Periodic Table are added to a salt bath and, after said salt bath is melted by heating, the material to be treated is immersed therein. CONSTITUTION:A base salt bath may be a molten salt bath capable of solublizing elements of the Group IVa and the Group Va and being stable at about 850-1,100 deg.C but a neutral salt or a mixed salt of the neutral salt and about 5-30mol% of a borate is available. When the neutral salt is used as the salt bath, an element of the Group IVa is added in an amount of 2-10wt% as a pure form and an element of the Group Va in a amount of 25-40% as a pure form. When a mixed liquid of the neutral salt and the borate or the borate alone is used as the salt bath, an element of the Group IVa is added in an amount of 1-4wt% as a pure form and an element of the Group Va in an amount of 5-40wt% in a pure form. Further, from an industrial standpoint, to a salt prepared by mixing about 5-30mol% or the borate in the neutral salt, about 2-3wt% of an element of the Group IVa and about 10- 20wt% of an element of the Group Va are desirably added and melted by heating.
