Abstract

PURPOSE: To remarkably reduce a sludge amount and to save a fuel consumption amount necessary for drying and incinerating sludge, by decomposing excess sludge, discharged from an active sludge process for waste water, with use of an aqueous hypochlorite solution.
CONSTITUTION: Excess sludge, discharged from an active sludge process for waste water, is decomposed with use of an aqueous hypochlorite solution so that the concentration of effective chlorine remaining in the treated solution will be at 0.05W5%. The decomposition of the excess sludge may be done by throwing the excess sludge into the aqueous hypochlorite solution or by pouring the aqueous hypochlorite solution into the excess sludge. The decomposing reaction is accompanied with temperature-rising by 5W10°C and finished in 2W5hrs. The decomposed ratio of the sludge, after treated, reaches a high level of 85% or more, while the sludge amount is reduced to 15% or less. As the aqueous hypochlorite solution may be used an aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution, an aqueous calcium hypochlorite solution or the like.
