Abstract

PURPOSE:To attain an ideal S-shaped spring characteristic, by using a free piston to divide an air chamber into a high and a low pressure chambers. CONSTITUTION:A rod 2, which can slide in the axial direction, is provided on the body 1 of a strut. The upper end of the rod 2 is attached to a vehicle body member 4 together with an elastic material 3 such as mounting rubber. A cylindrical air tank 5, which is open at the top, is provided on the peripheral surface of the strut body 1. An outer cylinder 6, which is open at the bottom, is provided on the upper end portion of the rod 2. An air chamber 8 enclosed with the tank 6, the outer cylinder 6 and a rolling seal 7 is divided into a high and a low pressure chambers A, B by a free piston 9. The upper and lower movement limits of the piston 9 are set by stoppers 10, 11. The pressure levels of the chambers A, B are prescribed so that the piston 9 is maintained halfway between the stoppers 10, 11 at the natural time when the weight of a vehicle body acts. This results in providing a pneumatic suspension which has an S-shaped spring characteristic. The feeling of ride is thus improved.
