Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the attenuation of transmitted light in a transparent state and to increase the contrast of a displayed image, by mixing a dichromatic coloring matter varying its light absorbing degree according to the arrangement into the liquid crystal layer of an optical write-in type liquid crystal light valve element. CONSTITUTION:Two glass subtrates 32 and 32' have transparent electrodes 31 and 31', and a photoconductive layer 21, a display light shielding layer 22 and a dielectric mirror layer 23 are provided in that order on the electrode 31. Then the vertical orientation is applied to the face where the electrode 31' is in contact with the liquid crystal 20 of the mirror 23. Thus an optical write-in type liquid crystal light valve is obtained. The crystal 20 is obtained by mixing a nematic liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy, a cholesteric liquid crystal and a dichromatic coloring matter varying its light absorbing degree by the arrangement together. Thus the light of the light dispersed part is attenuated at the light dispersed part where voltage is applied to the electrodes 31 and 31' from a driving power supply 40 and a horizontal orientation is applied to the liquid crystal molecule and the part where the light transmits with no application of voltage and by vertical orientation. As a result, the attenuation is reduced for the transmitted light, and the contrast is increased for a displayed image.
