Abstract

PURPOSE: Ion-exchanging groups are introduced into fiber containing epoxy groups in the resin in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol to produce the titled fiber sulfonated in high yield in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: The objective cation-exchanging fiber is produced by introducing ion-exchanging groups such as sulfonic acid groups from sulfurous acid or its salt into fiber containing epoxy groups in its resin part such as of a mixture of an acrylic polymer and epoxy group-containing polymer in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerol, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, or its water-soluble polymer as an aqueous solution of 30W95wt%, 10W90wt%, 5W 50wt% or 5W95wt% concentration respectively at 50W120°C for 2W20hr.
EFFECT: The resultant fiber has large surface area and high ion-exchange rate.
