Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a cation exchanger having excellent electrochemical properties, by subjecting a specified styrene terpolymer to crosslinking treatment.
CONSTITUTION: The following components are polymerized: 100pts.wt. monomer having a functional group (or a cation exchanging group) suitable to introduce a cation exchanging group, e.g., styrene or styrenesulfonic acid derivative; about 1W 50pts.wt. aromatic compound containing a halogen-substituted alkyl group and an unsaturated bond, e.g., chloromethylstyrene; and about 1W50pts.wt. (meth)acrylonitrile. Then, an ion exchanger is prepared by crosslinking the obtained terpolymer with the aid of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g., sulfuric acid or titanium tetrachloride and, if necessary, further introducing cation exchanging groups into the terpolymer.
