Abstract
PURPOSE: Particles of specific crosslinked polymer as a core are covered with a specific low-molecular compound containing acrylamide to form double-layered polymer particles, thus producing polymer emulsion having high water resistance, chemical resistance and weathering resistance economically.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture for the core component consisting of 75W 90wt% a hydrophobic monomer such as styrene or n-butyl methacrylate, 5W15wt% hydroxyl-containing monomer such as 2-hydroxyethl methacrylate, 1W5wt% acid monomer such as acrylic acid and 0.5W5wt% crosslinkable monomer such as 1,6- hexamethylene diacrylate is irradiated with ionizing radiation such as gammer rays to effect emulsion polymerization. Another monomer mixture for the sheath component consisting of 10W20wt% N-(alkoxymethyl) acrylamide, 80W90wt% hydrophobic monomer, 10W20wt% hydroxyl-containing monmer and 1W5wt% acid monomer and a 9W12C mercaptan are added to the resultant emulsion and irradiated with ionizing radiation to effect the emulsion polymerization.
