PURPOSE:To provide an apparatus for cooling a metal strip capable of contacting the metal strip with a surface of a rotary cooling body under a surface pressure uniform to a width direction of said surface by providing a mechanism capable of optionally adjusting a center shaft of the rotary cooling body constituting a rotary cooling body group against a metal strip pass line. CONSTITUTION:A metal strip 4 is passed through a rotary cooling body group 5 and successively cooled while wound around each rotary cooling body 2. In this case, a meandering amount from a center of a pass line is measured at an inlet and an outlet sides of the cooling body group by a meandering amount detecting end 1 of the metal strip. Then, an information thereof is transmitted to a drive apparatus of a rotary center shaft tilting apparatus 3 to tilt a center shaft tilting rotor 6 and the metal strip 4 is always positioned in the vicinity of a line center. As the result, the metal strip 4 is contacted with the cooling body 2 under a surface pressure uniform to a width direction thereof and enhancement of material quality, prevention of deffect formation and breakage of the metal strip 4 can be attained.
