Abstract

PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain a sintered product with superior strength and toughness by converting cast iron chips into a pressed body with high density by a specified powder regulating method and sintering the body at a specified temp. in a specified vacuum atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Cast iron chips are pulverized and decarburized so that the total carbon content may not exceed the maximum concn. of carbon dissolved in the austenite phase of the cast iron by ≤0.2%. The decarburied powder is die-pressed at ≥6.4g/cc pressing density, and the pressed body is sintered at the eutectic temp. of the cast iron W 1,300°C in a vacuum atmosphere of ≤10-2 Torr. Thus, cast iron chips can be provided with properties fit for powder metallurgical use.
