Abstract
PURPOSE:To electrolyze an aqueous alkali soln. under low voltage by closely adhering a gas and liquid permeable electrode layer on the surface of an ion exchange membrane, and allowing an electric current collector of smooth expanded metal having specific longer diameters, shorter diameters, wire diameters and numerical apertures to contact the electrode layer. CONSTITUTION:A gas and liquid permeable electrode layer is closely adhered to the surface of an ion exchange membrane, and an electric current collector consisting of smooth expanded metal having 1-10mm. of longer diameters and, 0.5-5mm. of shorter diameters of the holes, and 0.1-2mm. of wire diameters and 20-95% numerical apertures is allowed to contact this electrode layer. It is desirable to use the base metals such as titanium, niobium tantalum, ziroconium and the like which are coated with platinum group metals or these oxides on their surfaces for the anode side and iron group metals, stainless steel or these as base materials which are coated with Raney nickel, developed Raney-nickel, or rhodan nickel for the cathode side of the current collector.
