Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the production of a signal having extremely small noise from a solid state image pickup device by producing the difference of two transfers of the same size provided substantially at the same position as both sides of a photoelectric converter. CONSTITUTION:The first gate electrodes 30a, 30b, 30a', 30b' and the second gate electrodes 32a, 32b, 32a', 32b' are provided at both sides of picture elements 33 of a photoelectric converter 21. The light incident to a charge coupled element is converted into charge via the converter 21 in response to the quantity of the light, and the charge is transferred via transfer electrodes 22, 22' to transfer units 23, 23' respectively. Potentials are respectively formed at the transfer units 23, 23' by a signal applied to a pulse driving feeding wire. If a signal charge and a noise charge is stored in the potential well of one transfer unit 23', a noise charge approximately equal to the noise charge is stored in the well of opposite side. The noise charge thermally generated can be considered uniformly in the chip, and when the difference of the charge in both the wells are produced, a signal charge having extremely small noise component can be obtained.
