Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the titled emulsion having excellent structural viscosity and coating operability, copolymerizing a vinyl ester with ethylene in the presence of a specified hydroxypropylmethylcellulose in an aqueous medium.
CONSTITUTION: 95W75wt% vinyl ester, e.g., vinyl acetate, and 5W25wt% ethylene are copolymerized in an aqueous medium in the pesence of 0.4W3.0wt%, based on vinyl ester, hydroxypropylmethylcellolose containing 19W29wt% methoxy groups and 2W12wt% hydroxypropoxyl groups, having an average degree of ether substitution per glucose unit of 1.3W2.0 and a viscosity of 30W500cP (measures in a 2% aqueous solution at 20°C), a polymerization initiator, e.g., potassium permanganate, and a nonionic emulsifier, e.g., polyoxyethylene lauryl ether.
