Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer latex having excellent stability and being suitable for paints, surface treating agents, etc., by using a polyperfluoroether-carboxylate salt as a surfactant in the radical-polymerization of a fluorine-containing monomer.
CONSTITUTION: In radical-polymerizing a fluorine-containing monomer such as vinylidene fluoride, vinyl fluoride or tetrafluoroethylene by an emulsion polymerization process or a suspension polymerization process, there is used, as a surfactant, about 0.01W2wt%, based on the weight of the aqueous medium in the polymerization system, of an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt of a polyperfluoroether-carboxylic acid of the formula, wherein n is 1W4 and m is 0W12. Next, a polymer latex having excellent stability and freed from flock formation is obtained by emulsion-polymerizing or suspension-polymerizing the monomer in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, e.g., ammonium perfulfate or hydrogen peroxide.
