Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a dispersion capable of forming hard continuous films excellent in abrasion resistance, water resistance, solvent resistance, durability, etc., by preparing a polyurethane polymer in the presence of an oxyalkylene glycol derivative and dispersing the polyurethane polymer in water.
CONSTITUTION: A polyurethane dispersion capable of forming hard continuous films at low temperatures and being useful in coating or the like is obtained by preparing a polyurethane prepolymer from diisocyanate compound, e.g., tolylene diisocyanate, a polyol compound, e.g., polyoxyethylene glycol, and an active hydrogen compound having a salt-forming group, e.g., glycerin or monomaleate ester of propylene oxide adduct, in the presence of an oxyalkylene glycol derivative of the formula, wherein A and A' are each 1W18C hydrocarbon or a 1W4C acyl, R is a 2W4C alkylene and n is 1W3, e.g., ethylene glycol diethyl ether, and dispersing the prepolymer in water.
