Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare needle coke being able to form graphite having low expansion coefficient, by delayed coking of a raw material oil of coal origin contining no quinoline-insolubles (I.Q.) on a specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: To a row material oil of coalorigin (e.g. coal tor containing substantially no I.Q.) charged into the bottom part of a distilling column 1, a heavy fraction recovered from the column 1 is added, and they are heated in a furnace 2 before charged into a coke dsum 3 or 4 (drums 3 and 4 are used alternately by changeover). Subsequently, the row material oil is coked in the drum 3 (4) and components of the evolving gas are separated by the column 1 to expel a light fraction to the outside of they system and to add a heavy fraction to the raw materi oil charged into the bottom part. In this process, for at least 2.5hr after starting of charging of the raw oil into the coke drum, the average temperature of a liquid residing in the coke drum is maintained at 450°C or below and for at least 4hr after starting of the charging, a drum residence ratio in a drum represented by the formula is kept at 52% or more.
