Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare anthraquinone, directly, in high conversion and yield, in one step, by the high-temperature vapor-phase reaction of phthalic anthydride or phthalic anhydride and benzene using a long-life catalyst composed of silica-alumina-boria.
CONSTITUTION: Anthraquinone is prepared by the vapor-phase reaction of phthalic anyhdride or a mixture of phthalic anhydride and benzene at a high temperature (at 300W500°C, pref. 330W430°C; when phthalic anhydride is the only reactant, at 350W450°C). The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed essentially of silica-alumina-boria. The weight ratio of SiO2: Al2O3 is 95:5W5:95, pref. 90:10W20:80, and that of SiO2-Al2O3:B2O3 is 95:5W30:70, pref. 90:10W50:50. The catalyst can be used continuously for ≥ several tens hours, and can be activated easily. The conversion and the yield of the reaction are ≥2 times those attained by the conventional catalyst.
