Maximum values and minimum values among outputs of the registers 3 and 4 are applied to AND circuits 7 and 8, inputting a maximum and a minimum rewriting permit signal, and comparing circuits 5 and 6 to set values, corresponding to the state change of the sensor 1, to the registers 3 and 4. The maximum and minimum values from the registers 3 and 4 are supplied to an arithmetic circuit 9 to find a slice level value of an intermediate fixed ratio, and this level value is stored in a slice level register 10. The slice level from the register 10 and the detection signal of the sensor 1 are compared mutually by a comparing circuit 11 to detect the presence of the medium automatically.
