Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polymeric organotin compound suitable as an antifouling underwater paint having excellent antifouling property, coating film characteristics and storage stability, by reacting a specific acid-group-containing acrylic resin with an organotin compound in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is prepared by reacting (A) an acid-group containing acrylic resin having an acid value of 65W260, pref. 162W227, a weight- average molecular weight of 10,000W200,000, pref. 50,000W150,000, and a glass transition temperature of 0W100°C, pref. 20W80°C, and obtained by copolymerizing (a) a carboxyl- containing polymerizable α .β-unsaturatedacid (e.g. methacrylic acid) and (b) an alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid (e.g. methyl methacrylate), etc. with (B) an organotin compound (e.g. tributhltin oxide), in an organic solvent such as xylene. The amount of the component (B) is 1.05W1.30 equivalent per 1 equivalent of the carboxyl group in the component (A).
