Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an economical reducer with superior work efficiency, shelf stability, etc. by preparing a reducer for photoengraving contg. hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) or a salt thereof and tervalent Fe ion. CONSTITUTION:HEDP represented by the formula or a salt thereof is dissolved in an aqueous soln. of FeCl3.6H2O in (0.1-1.0)/(0.1-1.0) molar ratio. In case of 1:1 molar ratio, a precipitate may be formed, so it is desirable to use more HEDP. The resulting soln. is adjusted to 0.2-8.0pH with NH3, NaOH, Na2CO3 or the like. When a larger amount of silver for an image is used, a lower pH value is effective. Thiosulfate, thiourea or the like is added as a fixing agent. Thus, an economical reducer comparable or superior to a conventional reducer and having high shelf stability and work efficiency is obtd. without using a heavy metallic compound such as a compound of Cr, Cu or Ce causing the problem of enviromnental pollution due to waste water.
