Abstract
PURPOSE: On the reaction between a monochloroacetic ester, carbon monoxide, an alcohol and a basic substance in the presence of a catalyst, 2 kinds of basic substance different in properties are mixed in a specific proportion and used and the catalyst is added in portions, thus producing the titled compound in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: When a malonic diester is produced by reaction between a monochloroacetic ester, carbon monoxide, an alcohol and a basic substance in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl catalyst, as the basic substance, are used (A) an alkali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate and (B) an alkali metal hydroxide, a lower alcoholate, an alkali metal salt of organic acid or ammonia in such an amount that the B base becomes 0.5W10wt% based on the total of both bases and the catalyst is continuously added for half the reaction time. The reaction system is automatically controlled in pH, the catalyst is not deactivated and the stabilized operation is permitted.
