Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve mechanical durability by forming a magnetic grid on a magnetic recording medium layer with a vertical magnetic field recording after the layer made of spinodal type alloy magnetic material is applied on a scale base made of a high magnetism-permeability material. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recording medium 2 made of a spinodal type alloy magnetic material as iron-cobalt-chromium system alloy is applied on a base made of a high magnetism-permeability material such as iron of a magnetic scale 10 and a scale signal track 3 on which a magnetic grid of a specified wavelength is recorded based on the vertical magnetic field and an oscillator section 4 of an orignal signal are provided thereon. Each signal is read out with detection heads 21 and 22. A scale signal and an original signal magnetic field can be generated with a fufficient magnetomotive force while the recording medium layer 2 provides a sufficient strength against mechanical damage. This eliminates any protective layer thereby enabling the reading with a sufficiently small clearance.
