Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify a detection circuit by detecting the position of an object to be detected from the output of one of photodetectors facing a light reflecting body with a light emitting element being so controlled as to keep the output of the other constant. CONSTITUTION:A light emitting element 4 and photodetectors 6 and 7 different in the directivity are provided facing a light reflecting body 3 as a float for a liquid level meter or the like. The quantity of light reflected is detected with the photodetectors 6 and 7 and the position of an object to be detected as water surface or the like is detected from a relative value of the output thereof. At this point, an operation amplifier OP is connected between the light emitting element 4 and the photodetector 6 to control the quantity of light emitted from the light emitting element 4 so that the output of the photodetector 6 may be always kept constant regardless of displacement of the float 3 thereby allowing the output thereof to vary with displacement of the float. Thus, the output of the photodetector 7 provides a relative output ratio between the photodetectors 6 and 7 thereby simplifying the detection circuit along with an improved detection accuracy.
