Abstract
PURPOSE: To inhibit the coloring of bisphenol A remarkably in the distilling or chip molding step handling the bisphenol A under heating, by making the contact suface with the bisphenol A from a material consisting of titanium or Hastelloy.
CONSTITUTION: In handling bisphenol A at a temperature of 160°C or above, the contact surface to be in contact with the bisphenol A is made from a material consisting of titanium or Hastelloy, e.g. Hastelloy C alloy. The surfaces of the respective apparatus from a distilling apparatus to a recovering container of the bisphenol A and piping in the distilling step of the bisphenol A or the respective apparatuses from a melting tank to a molding apparatus, piping, etc. in the chip molding step of the bisphenol A may be cited as the contact surface. The bisphenol is obtained by reacting phenol with acetone in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin or in organic acid.
