Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled compound, having an optically active acidic moiety or acidic and alcoholic moieties and improved insecticidal activity without phytotoxicity to crops with low toxicity to men and cattle.
CONSTITUTION: Optically active α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-iso- valerate of the formula which is an ester of an S(+) acid with a racemic alcohol and an ester of an S(+) acid with an S(×) alcohol. The racemic compound of the formula causes partial chlorosis of new leaves in many crops; however, the optically active substance has the weak chlorotic action, and no phytotoxicity is observed in a practical concentration. The ester of the S(+) acid with the S(-) alcohol exhibits a particularly strong insecticidal activity.
