PURPOSE:To eliminate unnecessary displaying of lead shapes, etc. by selection of the orientation directions of liquid crystal molecules and the light transmission axes of polarizing members by providing vertically oriented regions on the horizontally oriented surface of at least one substrate out of a pair of substrates. CONSTITUTION:A horizontally oriented film 7 which orients liquid crystal molecules in an arrow (b) direction is formed over the entire surface of the upper substrate 2 of a pair of substrates 1, 2 formed with displaying electrodes 4, 5 on mutually opposite surfaces, and a horizontally oriented film 6 which orients liquid crystal molecules in the direction (a) orthogonal to the arrow (b) direction is formed in the regions on the electrodes 4 of the lower substrate 1. A vertically oriented film 8 is formed over the entire area of the regions other than the regions formed with the film 6. Such substrates 1, 2 are adhered and superposed via sealants 3, and a nematic liquid crystal is sealed between the substrates 1, 2, so that in the regions where the films 6, 7 oppose to each other the liquid crystal molecules 9 are twisted by 90 deg. and in the regions B where the film 8 and the film 7 are opposed they are hybrid oriented.
