Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent damage of optical fibers when a metallic pipe with an optical fiber is drawn to have a prescribed outer diameter, by installing a plug in the die and drawing metallic pipe through a space between the die and the plug.
CONSTITUTION: A floating plug 3 having a through hole 5 for passing an optical fiber 5 having a diameter which is twice to thrice as large as the diameter of the optical fiber 6, is set to the inside of a hole 2 of a die 1 for drawing. A metallic pipe 4 with the optical fiber 6 is drawn to reduce the diameter through a space formed by the inner wall of the hole 2 and the outer circumference of the plug 3. In this case, the optical fiber 6 is passed through the hole 5 of the floating plug 3, and the front ends of the optical fiber 6 and the metallic pipe 4 are fitted to a drawer at the outside, and both are drawn simultaneously. After drawing, the inner surface of the metallic pipe 4 is smoothly finished, and as a result, the optical fiber incorporated in the metallic pipe will not be damaged.
