PURPOSE:To obtain a coaxial magnetic scale having an intensive signal magnetic field and a thermal/heat expansion coefficient approximate to iron, by applying the magnetization in the direction orthogonal to the axial length direction of the scale main body to the outer circumference layer of the said magnetic scale. CONSTITUTION:A scale main body 10 is formed into a cylindrical shape with a spinodal type magnetic material such as an Fe-Co-Cr group alloy, or a magnetic material showing the isotropic magnetic anisotropy such as an Fe-Co-V group alloy magnetic material. The magnetization is applied to a magnetic recording medium 1 in the direction orthogonal to the axial length direction of the main body 10, and a magnetic grid Hs is formed along a prescribed length of axis. The magnetization to form the grid Hs is applied in the opposite direction to each of the adjacent regions to each other in the axial length direction of the medium 1. The grid Hs can also be formed at a part in the circumference direction of the medium 1.
