USE: An intermediate for a compound used as a haptenc for the enzymic immunoassay.
PROCESS: A 22-cyanocholest-5-ene of formula II is hydrolyzed with an excess equivalent of sodium hydroxide in a solvent, e.g. water-alcohol, at 20W180°C for 1W50hr, and if necessary a protecting group is then introduced into the resultant product to give the compound of formula I.
