Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled composition having high epoxy number and a small amount of hydrolyzable chlorine, by removing water in a reaction system as an azeotrope while boiling a substituted phenolic type novolak and epichlorohydrin under alkali conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Epichlorohydrin is added to a substituted type novolak (obtained by condensing a phenol replaced with an alkyl, etc. with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid or alkali catalyst) (rate of amount is 5W8mol epichlorohydrin/one phenolic hydroxy group in novolak), and water is removed as an azeotrope while the novolak and epichlorohydrin are being boiled at 60W80°C in the presence of an alkali (e.g., caustic soda, etc.). The distilled epichlorohydrin is circulated through the reaction system, dechlorination and ring opening reaction is carried out to give the desired composition.
