Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer having a high molecular weight easily, by making a polymerization solution for polymerizing a quaternary ammonium salt type diallylamine derivative monomer at an alkalinity of a specific pH or above.
CONSTITUTION: A quaternary ammonium salt type diallylamine derivative monomer, e.g. dimethyldiallylammonium chloride, of the formula (R1 and R2 are H or CH3; R3 and R4 are 1W18C alkyl, etc.; X is halogen other than F, CH3COO, etc.) is polymerized in the presence of a polymerization initiator, e.g. ammonium persulfate, in water or a polar solvent. In the process, an alkaline metallic hydroxide, e.g. NaOH, in an amount of preferably 1W10 mole% based on the monomer is added to keep the pH of the polymerization solution at 13 or above. The molecular weight of the polymer obtained at a monomeric concentration of 60W70% reaches a maximum. The more the amount of the alkaline substance, the higher the polymerization rate is.
