Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical fiber causing a very small loss due to scattering at a low cost by forming a reflecting film on the inside of a hollow pipe. CONSTITUTION:The reflecting film 3 is formed on the inside of a hollow pipe 2 to manufacture an optical fiber 1. A desired inexpensive material such as synthetic resin can be used as the material of the hollow pipe 2, and the reflecting film 3 is formed by vapor-depositing of coating a metal such as silver or aluminum. Light propagates through the internal space and scattering is negligible, so the degree of freedom of usable materials is considerably increased and the cost of the resulting optical fiber can be reduced. Since the reflecting film 3 is formed on the inside of the hollow pipe 2, light does not leak out of the pipe 2.

In such a hollow optical fiber, light propagates through the internal space and scattering is not a problem. Therefore, the degree of freedom in the materials that can be used is greatly expanded, and the cost of optical fibers can be reduced. Furthermore, since the reflective film 3 is formed on the inner surface of the hollow vibrator 2, there is no risk of light leaking out of the hollow vibrator 2, and the loss is extremely small.

FIG. 2 shows a second embodiment of the present invention, in which the end face of the hollow vibrator 2 is closed with a transparent plate 4. As shown in FIG. With such a configuration, it is possible to prevent dust from entering the inside of the optical fiber, and when the inside is evacuated, the transparent plate 4 can form a hermetic seal.
