BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Apparatus for continuously casting sheet metal by contact cooling to form a solidified shell are known from the prior art. In this conventional apparatus, as shown in FIG. 1, side dams 4.4 are provided to prevent molten metal from leaking axially outward from a pair of water-cooled casting rolls. And is a solidified shell formed on the inner surface of this side dam 4°4? In order to prevent this, nozzles 2, 2 for pouring molten metal are arranged near the inside of the side dams 4, 4. The heat of the molten metal poured from the nozzles 2, 2 is transferred to the molten metal existing near the inside of the side dams 4, 4 and the side dam 4.
, 4, thereby preventing the formation of a solidified shell on the inner surfaces of the side dams 4, 4. However, there is a drawback that simply pouring molten metal near the insides of the side dams 4 cannot sufficiently prevent the formation of solidified shells on the inside surfaces of the side dams.

Molten metal is poured into the recess, and the recess becomes a puddle. In addition, more heat from the poured molten metal is transferred to the side dam than in the conventional method, which effectively prevents the formation of a solidified shell on the inner surface of the side dam. It can be prevented. In addition, the wall of the side dam is cut out and a hole is installed on the inside surface of the side dam.
By making it smaller, it is possible to reliably prevent the formation of a coagulated shell on the inner surface of the side dam.

The molten steel 11 collected in the area surrounded by the two casting rolls 3, 6' and the molten steel dam (side dam) 4 is cooled by contacting the surfaces of the water-cooled casting rolls 3, 3', and forms hard shells 12 and 12, respectively. ' has finished forming,
As the casting rolls 3, 3' rotate 16, 16', they move downward, and the two solidified shells 12, 12' are rolled together to produce one sheet 13.

By pouring the molten steel 11 one after another into the corner 4c of the molten steel dam (side dam) 4 in this way, heat is supplied to the dam refractory material 4a and the molten steel near the side dam 4, and the side dam 4 is heated. The formation of a coagulated shell on the inner surface can be prevented.

This has the effect of sufficiently preventing this. As a result, because of the solidified shell formed on the inner surface of the side dam, stable casting can be performed without making rolling or drawing impossible, making it possible to perform direct rolling continuous casting, which was previously very difficult. This brings about the remarkable effect that it is possible to manufacture thin plates by.
