The present invention relates to a method for producing epoxy resins, so-called glycidyl ethers of phenols, which are mainly used in the electrical and electronic industries. It is essential for glycidyl ethers of phenols used as electrical and electronic materials to have a low content of hydrolyzable chlorine, and this is widely recognized in the industry. That is, hydrolyzable chlorine has adverse effects such as a decrease in electrical insulation and corrosion of lead wires. In particular, for glycidyl ethers of phenols used as raw materials for encapsulating integrated circuits using semiconductors, it is essential that the content of hydrolyzable chlorine is low. For example, an integrated circuit with a density of 64 kilobits or more is required to have a hydrolyzable chlorine content of 600 ppm or less. Various manufacturing methods have been investigated to reduce hydrolyzable chlorine. For example, the
No. 36000 describes a method for producing glycidyl ether of bisphenol A by gradually supplying an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to a solution of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin, in which water is azeotroped with epichlorohydrin under reduced pressure and low temperature conditions. A method is described in which the epichlorohydrin removed by distillation is recycled into the reaction system. In the examples of this patent, the hydrolyzable chlorine content is 1200 to 4500 ppm, and a sufficient improvement effect is not obtained. Japanese Patent Publication No. 54-90400
No. 54-13596 and US Pat. No. 8,121,727 describe a method for producing glycidyl ether of polyhydric phenol, in which alcohol is added to a solution of polyhydric phenol and epihalohydrin. In the examples of the patent, etc.,
In the case of No. 54-90400, the hydrolyzable chlorine of the glycidyl ether of bisphenol A obtained from bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin is approximately
1000ppm and total chlorine content is 1500~3500ppm
However, in the case of JP-A-13596/1983, the hydrolyzable chlorine of the glycidyl ether of phenol novolac obtained from phenol novolac and epichlorohydrin was 1500 ppm, and a sufficient improvement effect was not obtained. Further, although the patent and the like state that it is not necessary to remove water from the reaction system, it is known that epichlorohydrin decomposes even when it coexists with water, which is industrially disadvantageous. The present inventors conducted intensive research to obtain glycidyl ethers of phenols with a low content of hydrolyzable chlorine, and as a result, they arrived at the present invention. That is, the present invention provides a method for producing a monovalent or polyvalent glycidyl ether by reacting a monovalent or polyvalent phenol with epichlorohydrin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. This production method is characterized by carrying out the reaction in the coexistence of. The present invention has made it possible to produce monovalent or polyvalent phenol glycidyl ether with a low content of hydrolyzable chlorine. The monovalent or polyvalent phenol used in the present invention is a monovalent or polyvalent phenol consisting of a phenol unit substituted or unsubstituted with a halogen, an alkyl group, an allyl group, an alkenyl group, an aryl group, or an aralkyl group. , specifically phenol, ortho-cresol, metacresol, para-cresol, diphenolmethane (bisphenol F), diphenol ethane, diphenol propane (bisphenol A), bisphenol tetrabromide A, 1,1-bis -(4-hydroxyphenyl)
-1-phenylethane, 1,1-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1-dimethylmethane,
Phenol novolac, brominated phenol novolac, cresol novolac, brominated cresol novolac, resorcinol novolac, brominated resorcinol novolac, resorcinol, hydroquinone,
Examples include, but are not limited to, methylresorcinol and bisphenol tetrachloride A. The alkali metal hydroxide used in the present invention is
Specific examples include sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, etc., but are not limited to these.
The amount of the alkali metal hydroxide used is preferably about the same mole per mole of phenolic hydroxyl group. When the amount of alkali metal hydroxide used is small, the amount of gel produced as a by-product is small, which is advantageous in production, but hydrolyzable chlorine remains. If the amount of alkali metal hydroxide used is large, the amount of gel increases, which is disadvantageous in production. The ether compounds used in the present invention are cyclic or linear ether compounds, and specifically include dioxane, diethoxyethane, etc., but are not limited thereto. The amount of these ether compounds used is preferably 10 to 100 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of epichlorohydrin. When the amount used is 10 parts by weight or less, the effects of the present invention are not so significant. If the amount used is too large, intermolecular reactions will proceed, the epoxy equivalent (weight per mole of epoxy group) will increase, and the quality of the glycidyl ether of phenols will deteriorate. Considering this, it is preferably 100 parts by weight or less. The amount of epichlorohydrin used in the present invention is 2.5 mol to 1 mol of phenolic hydroxyl group.
20 mol is preferable, more preferably 4 mol to 10 mol
It is a mole. This means that if the amount of epichlorohydrin used is small, intermolecular reactions will produce high molecular weight products, resulting in quality deterioration such as an increase in the melt viscosity of the glycidyl ether of phenols, and furthermore, an increase in the amount of gel formed, which is industrially undesirable. This is because it is profitable, and also because if the amount of epichlorohydrin used is large, the volume of the reaction mixture will increase, resulting in industrial disadvantages such as decreased productivity. The epoxy equivalent as used in the present invention is defined as the molecular weight per mole of glycidyl ether group. Hydrolyzable chlorine refers to the chlorine ions that are released when a glycidyl ether compound of monovalent or polyvalent phenol is dissolved in dioxane, an alcoholic solution of potassium hydroxide is added, and the mixture is heated under reflux for 30 minutes, using a silver nitrate solution. It is determined by back titration and expressed as the weight percentage of chlorine atoms in the compound. Below, the present invention will be explained in detail with examples.
It is not limited to these. Examples 1 to 7 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2 A thermometer, a dropping funnel for continuously adding an aqueous alkali metal solution, a stirring blade, and water, epichlorohydrin, and ether compounds evaporated from the reaction system are cooled and liquefied to form an organic layer. The organic layer is returned to the reaction system and the aqueous layer is separated based on the difference in specific gravity, and the aqueous layer is removed using a separable flask with a baffle of capacity 1 and a separation tube with a cooling tube. Glycidyl ethers of phenols were synthesized by reacting them with epichlorohydrin. The reaction was carried out in the first step while continuously adding an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution in the amount shown in Table 1 for 5 hours.
The test was carried out in the presence of ether compounds of the type and amount shown in the table. After the reaction was completed, unreacted epichlorohydrin, ether compounds, and trace amounts of water were removed by vacuum distillation. The glycidyl ether of phenols containing by-product salts obtained at this time was dissolved in methyl isobutyl ketone, and the by-product salts were separated. A small amount of water contained in methyl isobutyl ketone containing glycidyl ether of phenols was removed by distillation, a trace amount of remaining salt was separated, and methyl isobutyl ketone was removed by distillation under reduced pressure to obtain glycidyl ether of phenols. Table 1 shows the hydrolyzable chlorine content and epoxy equivalent of the glycidyl ether of phenol thus obtained. Although Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 differ in the absolute amounts of phenol, epichlorohydrin, and sodium hydroxide used, their relative amounts (molar ratio) used are the same. Furthermore, although there is a slight difference in reaction temperature, this is due to the presence or absence of an ether compound. Therefore, Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 have substantially the same reaction conditions except for the presence or absence of the use of an ether compound. The amount of hydrolyzable chlorine in Example 1, which used an ether compound, was 390 ppm, whereas it was 670 ppm in Comparative Example 1, which did not use an ether compound, and the effect of reducing hydrolyzable chlorine by using an ether compound was remarkable. be. Furthermore, in Example 6, in which more ether compounds were used than in Example 1, the amount of hydrolyzable chlorine was
It further decreased to 350ppm.
