Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 本発明はACメモリ型プラズマデイスプレイパ
ネル(以下PDPと略す)の駆動方法の改良に関
する。
最近情報処理端末用の出力表示装置としてAC
メモリ型のPDP装置が、その平板性、表示品質、
信頼性などの点で優れているため銀行窓口業務シ
ステム、ポスシステム其の他種々の情報システム
に用いられている。このPDP装置の表示パネル
の1例を第1図の分解斜視図および第2図の断面
図により説明すると、符号1および2は透明なガ
ラス基板であつてその一方の基板1の表面には縦
方向に、他方の基板2の表面には横方向にそれぞ
れ複数条の電極3および4を形成し、それぞれ電
極を形成した面に誘電体層5と保護層6とを蒸着
またはスパツタリングにより被着し、この基板1
と2を対向させ周囲にスペーサ7を挾んで若干の
間隔をもたせて密封し、内部の空間8にネオンを
主体とし少量のアルゴン、キセノン等を混ぜた希
ガスを封入し、電極3と電極4との間に駆動回路
より電圧を印加して、その交点において放電を生
ぜしめ、それにより所望のキヤラクタあるいはパ
ターンを発光表示できるようにしたものである。
このようなPDP装置においては、点火失敗や
余分点火による表示ミスを軽減し駆動電圧マージ
ンを増大するために第3図の如く一定周波数の交
番電圧を印加する維持モーードA、維持モードよ
り細いパルスを必要とする消去モードB、通常よ
り高い電圧を必要とする書込モードCを使い分け
ている。このように一定周波数の交番電圧により
駆動している場合、非同期インターフエースを実
施しようとするとインターフエース上のデータ転
送周波数とPDPの周波数のいずれかにより第4
図の如く所要モードの切換時において不必要なパ
ルス9が形成され、これが消去モードと同様な波
形となつた場合にはPDPの表示が消えてしまう。
本発明はこの欠点を改良するために案出されたも
のである。
このため本発明においては、一定周期の交番電
圧を印加する維持モードと、維持モードより細い
パルスの消去モードと、通常より高い電圧を必要
とする書き込みモードにより駆動するプラズマデ
イスプレイパネルの駆動方法において、外部より
入力される非同期の表示入力周波数の周期より若
干短かい周期となるプラズマデイスプレイパネル
駆動モードを設定し、次の外部信号が入力される
までは交番電圧を印加しない期間を設けたことを
特徴とするものである。
以下添付図面に基づいて本発明方法を詳細に説
明する。
第5図に本発明による駆動方法を示す。本発明
法は図に示す如く外部よりの入力データの処理す
る期間T1と交番電圧を印加しない期間T2を設け
たものである。そして外部よりの入力データを処
理する期間T1は外部より入力される非同期入力
周波数より若干短い周期となるようにする。一例
として外部より入力される信号の周期を100μsと
すれば入力データ処理期間T1を例えば75μs、交
番電圧を印加しない期間T2を25μsとすれば良い。
このように交番電圧を印加しない期間T2を設け
ることにより前述したようなモード切替り時にお
ける不要な細いパルスの発生を防止することがで
きる。この交番電圧を印加しない期間T2はPDP
の発光はないが、発光部分に電荷が保存されるの
で次の入力により発光は継続される。このため表
示輝度は若干低下するがT2を充分短かくすれば
実用上問題はない。
次に本発明方法を実施するための駆動回路の一
例を第6図に示す。本回路を図により説明する
と、符号11はPDP、12および13はそれぞ
れXおよびYのトランジスタ回路、14および1
5は書き込み回路、16は基本信号発生部、17
は制御部である。そして基本信号発生部16のQ
及び端子は制御部17の出力端子とAND回路
18〜21に接続され、AND回路18〜21の
出力端はPDPのトランジスタ回路12,13及
び書き込み回路14,15にそれぞれ接続されて
いる。そして基本信号発生部16よりは矢印で示
す如く互に位相がずれた基本信号22および23
を発生してAND回路18〜21へ送り、制御部
17は外部よりの信号を矢印で示す波形24にし
てAND回路18〜21に送る。これによりAND
回路18〜21より第5図に示したPDP駆動用
の波形が出力される。
なお制御部17における出力24は第7図に示
す回路により容易に作ることができる。即ち発振
器25が40KHzの周期でパルスを発生しているも
のとすると、カウンター26のA端子よりは第8
図のAに示す25μsのパルスが出力されB端子より
は第8図のBに示す如くAの周期の2倍の50μsの
パルスが出力される。このパルスA及びBを
AND回路27に入力すれば第8図のQに示す如
くなり、これをインバータ回路28を通せば目的
とするQ′の如き出力が得られる。
以上説明した如く本発明は非同期入力周波数よ
り若干短い周期のPDP駆動モードを設定し、次
の外部信号が入力されるまでは交番電圧を印加し
ないようにすることにより、非同期インターフエ
ースの実施を可能としたもである。

Claims (1)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 1 一定周期の交番電圧を印加する維持モード
    と、維持モードより細いパルスの消去モードと、
    通常より高い電圧を必要とする書き込みモードに
    より駆動するプラズマデイスプレイパネルの駆動
    方法において、外部より入力される非同期の表示
    入力周波数の周期より若干短かい周期となるプラ
    ズマデイスプレイパネル駆動モードを設定し、次
    の外部信号が入力されるまでは交番電圧を印加し
    ない期間を設けたことを特徴としたプラズマデイ
    スプレイパネルの駆動方法。
