Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an optical part molding material useful as a substrate for application type optical disc, having excellent transparency, heat resistance and chemical resistance, comprising a polyvinylcyclohexane polymer prepared by hydrogenating an aromatic ring of styrene polymer.
CONSTITUTION: The aromatic ring of a styrene polymer (styrene homopolymer or copolymer containing ≥60wt.% styrene and one or more monomers copolymerizable with styrene) is hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst such as Raney nickel or ruthenium supported on carbon or alumina under 50W250Kg/cm2 at 100W200°C for 0.5W5hr to give the aimed material comprising a polyvinylcyclohexane polymer. The polymer is heated and dried, water in the polymer is removed to prevent formation of foams and the polymer is molded usually at 230W350°C to give a molded article suitable for optical uses, having excellent transparency and small strain.
