Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the cost and the size by forming one polarizing plate to a shape having an area which is smaller than the size of the inner peripheral surface of a sealing member and is capable of corresponds to the display part of segment glass. CONSTITUTION: At least either of the front polarizing plate 6 or rear polarizing plate 11 is formed to the shape smaller than the size of the inner peripheral surface of the sealing member 3 formed to an annular shape and the rear plarizing plate 11 and light reflecting plate 12 are formed to the shapes having the areas which deal nearly with display part 9 by eight segment mosaic-shaped segment electrodes of the segment glass 1. Then, a liquid crystal material 4 merely exists and the sealing material 3 does not exist in the part where the front polarizing plate 6 and the rear polarizing plate 11 face each other. The shielding of light occurs only when the sealing member 3 exclusive of the liquid crystal material 4 exists between both polarizing plates 6 and 11 and, therefore, the points corresponding to the sealing member 3 are no longer visible black in appearance and the need for the window frame member of the conventional device is eliminated. As a result, the use of the part corresponding to the sealing member 3 as part of the display space is made possible and the size and material cost are reduced.
