Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively the title polymer excellent in hardness, strength and toughness, by reacting a specified polymer with an OH group- containing unsaturated polyester. CONSTITUTION:2-30mol.% unsaturated polybasic acid anhydride (a) (e.g., maleic anhydride) is copolymerized with a vinyl monomer (b) (e.g., styrene) in the presence of a polymerization modifier (e.g., mercaptan) to obtain a polymer (A) having an acid anhydride group as a side chain. Component A is reacted with an OH group-containing unsaturated polyester (B) obtained by sterifying a polybasic acid mixture containing an alpha,beta-unsaturated polybasic acid as a component and other polybasic acids as modifying components with a polyhydric alcohol at a eight ratio (A:B) of 20-80:80-20 in component (b) in the presence of an acid, an amine and a polymerization inhibitor in the presence of air to obtain the title polymer in which an unsaturated polyester is grafted onto a polymer main chain comprising C-C bonds through an ester bond and a COOH group is present in the vicinal position.
