Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the corrosion resistance and workability of a steel sheet by hot dip plating the steel sheet with a zinc-iron alloy contg. a specified amt. of iron and by controlling the coating weight of the alloy to a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:A steel strip (sheet) is hot dip plated with a zinc-iron alloy obtd. by melting 1-12wt.% iron in molten zinc. The coating weight of the alloy is controlled to a prescribed value by gas wiping or other method so as to prevent the diffusion of iron (steel strip) into a formed alloy layer (superalloying) due to the sensible heat of the steel strip. The hot dip plated steel strip is then preferably cooled at a prescribed cooling rate by roll cooling, sprayed water cooling or other method. When the amt. of iron in the molten zinc is <1%, corrosion resistance and adhesion to paint obtd. by zinc-iron alloy plating are hardly obtd. When the amt. of iron is >12%, it is necessary to increase the bath temp. to >=about 800 deg.C. A layer may be formed on the alloy layer by plating other than hot dip plating, e.g., electroplating or vapor deposition.
