Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a molded article of silicon carbide having excellent physical properties, by molding an organosilicon polymer into fibers, etc., adsorbing a specific amount of a halogen on the fibers, perburning and burning.
CONSTITUTION: An organosilicon polymer is molded into fibers, tape and film and 0.01W150wt.% halogen (preferably iodine) is adsorbed on and/or treated with the molded article at ≥50°C. A polycarbosilastyrene copolymer obtained by heat-treating a polysilastyene and/or irradiating with ultraviolet rays is used as the organosilicon polymer and the polycarbosilastyrene copolymer has about 1,000W50,000 molecular weight and the molar ratio of copolymer of carbosilane bond and silastyrene bond of preferably about 3:7W7:3. Then the molded article is preburnt in an inert gas at 200W800°C and burnt at 800W1,400°C. Consequently, a molded article of silicon carbide having excellent physical properties such as strength and modulus is produced by an extremely shortened crosslinking and infusibilizing process.
