Abstract

PURPOSE:To read a picture having an arbitrary length by providing a display means on which the extent of movement of an image read sensor is successively displayed and a stop key which stops movement of this sensor. CONSTITUTION:When a document is set on a document scanning plane 1 and a start key on an operation unit 7 is operated in this state, a pulse motor 6 is driven and an image read sensor 3 which is freely movably provided is moved by a pulley 4 and a belt 5 connected to the motor 6 to read the picture line by line. At this time, the extent of movement of the sensor 3 is calculated based on the driving signal given from the motor 6, and the calculated extent of movement is successively displayed on a display part 8. When the stop key on the operation unit 7 is operated in accordance with this display when the sensor 3 reaches an arbitrary position, read of the document is stopped. Thus, the picture having an arbitrary length is read.
